Many of my journeys to China have been under the umbrella of Red Gate Studios if you are interested in a residencey go to Redgateresidency@aer.net.cn
Bagoiu is on the outskirts of Beijing in an industrial area that has loft studios for international artists and chineses artists. Imagine Gallery is also in the complex and a small village is only a walk away from the studios.

Well here I go again off to Beijing and on the eve of my journey.
It has been approximately eighteen months since my last visit and I am both excited and also questioning the nature of the madness that drives me to go on journeys that have an edge of isolation and difficulty in the communication and lifestyle whilst there.
However having said that I feel that it is important for me to uphold the relationships that I have formed during previous visits and also cut myself some slack from family and work responsibilities so as to acquire some professional development time as an artist and thinker. This statement seems rather odd as I spend a lot of time wondering if I am really either of these as I have not followed the path of self promotion and marketing of so many others and often wonder if the artistic joy that I receive from making and thinking through the act of creating is not just a self indulgent want or a bit of therapy to cope with the world at large.
As you can see doubt and pre leaving home nerves are creeping in to my consciousness, I guess it will be good to get there and start the journey. The plan is to spend time to about 2 pm every day working on ideas, walking and investigating the Bagiou area, finding people to interview about their life stories and women from a variety of nationalities to comment on what it is like to be a woman today. Also I have paper and paints to continue with the paintings that I have been working over the last twelve months and I am hoping to bring together the ideas from the portraits and the storyboards. In the afternoons and evenings I intend to catch up with existing friends and research the contemporary arts scene once more taking in the changes and discovering new artists and Galleries. Somewhere in this mix there will be mannies and peddies and a little shopping and sightseeing of course.
Today I am still dealing with the final pack, the stuck door, missing B and the kiddies as they are on holidays and pre trip nerves, roll on tomorrow I need to get started.
